Mechanical Testing of Calcium Phosphate e.g. Hydroxyapatite (HA) Coatings & Metallic Coatings

ASTM F1147, ASTM F1044 & ASTM F1160 Test Methods

Test methods determining the adhesive or cohesive strength of calcium phosphate e.g. Hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings and metallic coatings under uniaxial tensile stress, uniaxial shear stress, and shear and bending fatigue stress.

Adhesion strength (or cohesion strength) measurements of calcium phosphate coatings and metallic coatings are based on the results from static and fatigue loading of standard test coupons. Specifically, two coupons – one coated and one uncoated – are mated together via an adhesive (e.g. FM-1000), and cured in an oven under constant temperature and force. Specimens are then loaded on a servo-hydraulic mechanical test stand at a constant rate, until failure. For static testing, loading would include a uniaxial tensile stress (ASTM F1147), or a uniaxial shear stress (ASTM F1044). For fatigue testing, the two loading conditions would include a cyclic shear stress and a cyclic bending stress, respectively. The goal of the adhesion testing is to determine the static and fatigue strengths of the calcium phosphate or metallic coatings.

Applications and Benefits

Custom resources have been dedicated towards maintaining a level of excellence in Lucideon’s coating and adhesion testing, including dedicated and custom adjustable aluminum set fixtures, as well as both Inconel and Titanium bars for test assembly.

Typical applications include preclinical testing of orthopedic implants and devices to support FDA and regulatory submissions, R&D efforts, and quality control programs. Additional non-healthcare based applications include testing of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) and other coatings used in aerospace and power generation applications.

Form of Results

Static Testing: Maximum load (N), sample area (mm2), coating thickness, adhesion strength (Mpa), failure substrate / coating (%), mode of failure, and high-res post-failure photographs.

Fatigue Testing: Sample area (mm2), coating thickness, applied stress and cycles to failure or run-out, failure mode, failure location, R ratio, and high-res post-failure photographs.
