Orthopaedic implants often have complex structures and are exposed to a range of translations and loading conditions that induce wear and fatigue of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), metal and ceramic components and bearing surfaces. It is important for manufacturers to be sure their products are safe for use and that they will perform to the highest standard following implantation. FDA guidance documents and ASTM/ISO standards don’t always describe the worst case testing conditions and considerations, yet these are often required to evaluate possible scenarios that may occur in vivo.
