Pratt & Whitney Will Open New Facility Dedicated to Ceramic Matrix Composites
Pratt & Whitney is to open a new 5,600m2 ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) research and development facility in Carlsbad, California. Dozens of employees will focus on the design, development and production of CMCs for aerospace applications. Compared to traditional materials in the hot section of a jet engine, CMCs are known to be lighter and have higher temperature capability, which can enable improved thermal efficiency for gas turbine engines. Penn State Awarded $3.3 Million to Develop More Efficient Gas Turbines
Researchers in Penn State’s Department of Mechanical Engineering have been awarded over $3.3 million by the U.S Department of Energy to support advancements in the performance and efficiency of combustion turbines and turbine-based power cycles in fossil fuel power generation. The projects involve additive manufacturing techniques for ceramic matrix composites, improved cooling effectiveness in turbine components and the radical reimagining of the design and manufacturing of fuel injection hardware. Performance of Zirconia Ceramics in Oil and Gas Industry
Following a Beroe market intelligence report looking at unrefined petroleum, Morgan Advanced Materials has posted a short article with interesting facts and figures, and looking at how parts made from magnesia stabilised zirconia ceramic are fast becoming the preferred alternative in key equipment such as heavy-duty pumps. For instance, Morgan’s Nilcra® zirconia is a robust and simple to use replacement material for applications where high wear rates occur. By using this type of zirconia ceramic, the time between overhauls for a sandy crude oil pump can increase from the typical one-year lifespan up to four to six years instead. Find out more.
Bosch – Increased Power With Silicon Carbide Semiconductors
Bosch says new microchips made of silicon carbide (SiC) that it has developed will now help electromobility make a great leap forward. In the future, the SiC chips will set the pace in power electronics – the command centre for electric and hybrid vehicles. Compared to the silicon chips used to date, SiC semiconductors have better electrical conductivity. This enables higher switching frequencies while also ensuring that much less energy is dissipated in the form of heat. Discover more.
Lucideon to run Refractories Training Courses during Ceramics Expo Week
Following the success of last year’s courses, Lucideon, the materials technology company, will be running two of their Refractories training modules on the day before and the two days after Ceramics Expo in Cleveland, Ohio, in May 2020. ‘An Introduction to Refractories and Refractories Testing’ will run on Monday 4 May and the two-day course, ‘Refractories for the Glass Industry’ will take place on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 May. Equipping Ceramic Coatings with Heat Radiation Control
In the search for materials that can withstand high temperatures, researchers at Purdue University’s School of Electrical and Computer Engineering have developed ceramic nanotubes that behave as thermal antennas. These offer control over the spectrum/direction of high-temperature heat radiation. The research is supported through Nascent Light-Matter Interactions, a program by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. Read more.
Joint Development Plan for Silicon Carbide Substrates
Soitec, an industry leader in designing and manufacturing innovative semiconductor materials, has announced a joint development programme with Applied Materials on next-generation silicon carbide (SiC) substrates. Demand for SiC-based chips has been rising, particularly in electric vehicles, telecommunication and industrial applications; however, adoption has been limited due to challenges related to supply, yield and cost of SiC substrates. Soitec will be working with Applied Materials to develop substrates that can overcome these challenges and bring increased value to the industry. Find out more here.
China Ceramics Progresses Plans to Enter Malaysian Market
China Ceramics Co Ltd, a leading Chinese manufacturer of ceramic tiles used for exterior facing and for interior flooring and design in residential and commercial buildings, has announced that it has entered into a non-binding letter of intent with a Malaysian contractor for its ceramic tiles, including its new 'cooling' ceramic tiles that it introduced in August of 2019. The Malaysian contractor intends to use the company's ceramic tile products in high rise apartment buildings in the third quarter of 2020. Discover more.
New Slippery Toilet Coating Provides Cleaner Flushing and Saves Water
Penn State researchers have developed a method that dramatically reduces the amount of water needed to flush a conventional toilet — a bio-inspired, liquid, sludge- and bacteria-repellent coating that can essentially make a toilet self-cleaning. Further details.
More Accolades For CeramTec
Last month, CeramTec appeared in two renowned rankings. Firstly, it was named global market leader in the field of advanced ceramics in the annual ranking published by the University of St Gallen. Secondly, CeramTec was named one of the 50 most innovative medium-sized companies in Germany.
