Petrographic Examination - Test Method

Petrographic Examination of Natural Stone - Test Method - BS EN 12407:2007

Petrographic examination of rocks using optical microscopy and visual examination to describe and characterise the material.

Applications and Benefits

Enables rock types to be examined and described according to recognised standards and terminology (BS EN 12670). From the petrographic examination and knowledge of the origin of the stone, denomination criteria can be assigned (BS EN 12440). An unambiguous definition of the rock is derived.

Form of Results

Descriptive examination of the rock covering visual properties and microscopic examination of the structure. A rock type is assigned based on the mineralogy, grain size and structure using standard rock classification criteria.
