Ceram Strengthens Its Polymer Consultancy and Characterization Service
Ceram has gathered its existing polymer offerings into a new polymer consultancy and characterization service for medical devices, pharmaceutical and packaging manufacturers.
In addition to the chemical, physical, microscopy, mechanical and bulk analysis that Ceram provides, the focus of the new offering is on consultancy, helping manufacturers to solve product failures quickly and definitively, to select the right polymers for the right application and to develop innovative new products to meet the needs of the future.
The polymers team is being led by Dr. Xiang Zhang, a Royal Society Industry Fellow at the University of Cambridge. Having worked with polymers in academia and industry for over thirty years, Dr. Zhang is one of the leading polymer experts in the world. He says:
"Consultancy is a major part of this new service, backed up, of course, by the extensive analysis capabilities that we have at Ceram. We know how important it is to identify root causes of failures quickly and accurately in order to avoid downtime and to ensure optimum yields. We believe it is essential to work with manufacturers to make sure that the correct raw materials and polymers are chosen, to ensure that product performance is optimized via the setting of correct processing parameters and to facilitate the development of new products that are right first time."
Ceram has long been known for its innovation work in the medical devices industry. Current work includes developing biodegradable polymer and hybrid composites for advanced therapies and replacing PVC with alternatives of equal or better performance.
The consultancy service is backed up by Ceram's extensive analytical capabilities, including techniques such as Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), Time-of-Flight Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToFSIMS), X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Dr. Zhang says:

We put together customized testing packages for clients to ensure that their needs are met quickly and effectively."
