Lucideon Publishes White Paper on Extremity Wear Testing

Lucideon has published a new white paper titled “Extremity Wear Testing – Total Ankle and Shoulder Replacement Testing”.

The white paper, discusses the requirements for standardized testing of ankle and shoulder implants to bring them more in line with the well documented processes for other orthopedic joint tests, such as knees and hips.

Dr. Qianqian Wang, Biomedical Engineer at Lucideon, said: “At the moment not enough is known about the in vivo conditions for ankle and shoulder orthopedic joints to test them as accurately as we do for say hip, knee or spinal disc replacements.

“It is important to understand these conditions so that better prostheses can be designed, and accurately tested.  This will help to replicate normal movement and reduce pain and discomfort to the recipient.  Current standards for other orthopedic joints have become relatively advanced, taking into account load bearing and impingement beyond normal joint movement.  This paper highlights the need to bring that level of standardization to less common joint replacements as well, and also discusses what is needed to reach that point.”

Lucideon provides expert wear testing for a range of orthopedic implants at sites both in the UK and in the US.  Lucideon’s state-of-the-art, ISO accredited, wear testing facilities operate to existing and, when required, customized standards and test methods to meet requirement.

Lucideon’s wide range of expertise and extensive analytical capabilities, including non-contact surface roughness evaluation (3D-Profiling), SEM evaluation and laser diffraction techniques, mean that wear testing can be supported by in-depth analysis, for example of wear debris.  Development work can be done to go beyond ISO standards and a comprehensive test report helps with regulatory submission.

The white paper can be downloaded via the Resources panel on the right of this page.
