New Biodegradable Polymer Paper Published

Lucideon is pleased to announce the release of a new research paper on biodegradable polymers.  The paper, titled ‘The effect of particle size on the in vivo degradation of poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide)/α-tricalcium phosphate micro- and nanocomposites’, has been published by a research team from the University of Cambridge, UK.

The research group’s PhD students are sponsored by Lucideon, with the company’s Principal Consultant and Head of Medical Materials and Devices, polymer expert, Dr Xiang Zhang, acting as industry supervisor for the project.

Biodegradable polymers show great promise for medical applications and could allow implants and devices to degrade harmlessly over time in the body, upon completion of their function.  This is important as traditional implanted devices can cause serious issues in the long term if not removed, and surgery to remove them adds inconvenience and risk to patients.

Dr Xiang Zhang said:

“At Lucideon we do a lot of work on polymer development, whether that be in-house, with clients or within EU-funded projects such as ReBiostent and HyMedPoly.  Our innovative approach has enabled us to recently develop new polymeric hybrids that consist of bioresorbable polymers and glassy materials to meet unmet medical device needs.  Our team of polymer experts, both here in the UK and in the US, work closely with world-leading universities like Cambridge.  This allows us to push our knowledge even further, while guiding research to meet real industry needs.

“The paper focuses on the effects of particle size in polymer degradation, but the research also represents the first time we have used our hybrid materials concept for in vivo study on biodegradable polymers.”

Lucideon offers materials testing, development and commercialization services to a wide range of industry partners.  The company has a number of leading polymer scientists who work on developing novel materials and polymer solutions for some of industry’s biggest problems.  Much of the polymer team’s efforts are focused on finding healthcare and medical solutions.  Dr Xiang Zhang, author of a number of industry leading books on polymers, has recently published his latest book ‘Science and Principles of Biodegradable and Bioresorbable Medical Polymers’.
