Doctoral Thesis Success for HyMedPoly Researcher: Lukas Gritsch
Lucideon is pleased to announce that Lukas Gritsch, a HyMedPoly Early Stage Researcher, has received his doctorate.
Lukas successfully defended his doctoral thesis on 17th April 2019 at the Institute of Biomaterials, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. He carried out his thesis entitled: "An investigation on antibiotic-free antibacterial materials combining bioresorbable polyesters, chitosan and therapeutic ions" under the academic supervision of Prof Aldo R. Boccaccini, and in collaboration with Lucideon, under the supervision of Dr Christopher Lovell.
Prof Silvia Fare (Polytechnic of Milan, Italy), Prof Wolfgang Goldmann (Biophysics Group, FAU), Prof Stephan Wolf (Chair for Glass and Ceramics, FAU) and Prof Boccaccini were the members of the examination board.
Prof Boccaccini highlighted the outstanding research work carried out by Lukas, in particular considering the special conditions of the HyMedPoly Engineering Doctorate programme, which involved spending half of the time (18 months) at Lucideon.
Dr Christopher Lovell, polymer processing engineer at Lucideon, said:
"It was a great pleasure to work with Lukas throughout his doctoral research, especially during his 18 month secondment at Lucideon. He is an extremely capable individual who excelled through the unique academic-industrial partnership created for HyMedPoly between the University of Erlangen-Nuremburg and Lucideon. Lukas delivered some excellent research outcomes and, as a result, we have several peer-reviewed articles published to date. On behalf of everyone here at Lucideon, I congratulate him on achieving his doctorate and wish him continued success as he develops his career in biomaterials research. "
The project coordinator Prof. & Dr. Xiang Zhang, principal consultant and head of medical materials and devices at Lucideon, said:
"Congratulations to Lucas for achieving his doctorate. This is the first time Lucideon has led such a large industrial PhD programme, training a total of 15 young professionals. The goal with this programme was not only to develop new medical materials that have intrinsic antibacterial functionality, but also to nurture a new generation of industrial professionals who would become capable of taking industry innovation from initial concepts through to commercialisation. Thanks to his individual effort, Lucas has helped us to achieve these goals and his achievements at Lucideon have set a high standard for future industry-orientated PhD training. "
Lukas’ endeavours led to the development and characterization of a completely new chitosan-Cu system that exhibits high antibacterial capability, no cytotoxicity and is capable of use in medical devices to achieve antibiotic-free surfaces. Some papers from Lukas’ thesis have been already published [1, 2] and other publications are being prepared. We congratulate Lukas for achieving his Dr.-Ing. degree and wish him all the best in his future career.
