Presented by Ramiro Alan Ramirez, Prosthetic Knee Wear Test Engineer, Lucideon, and Kevin Knight, CEO, Knight Mechanical Testing, the webinar discusses: common standards - what they cover and what they don’t and areas that require unique test methods including: coatings of devices; ageing of devices; adverse wear testing; dynamic testing of acetabular components and adapting simulators to emulate joints without available standards.
Lucideon and Knight Mechanical Testing have expertise in testing orthopedic implants and medical devices to meet standards and in developing methods when guidance is not sufficient.
Orthopedic implants often have complex structures and are exposed to a range of translations and loading conditions that induce wear and fatigue of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), metal and ceramic components and bearing surfaces. It is important for manufacturers to be sure their products are safe for use and that they will perform to the highest standard following implantation. FDA guidance documents and ASTM/ISO standards don’t always describe the worst case testing conditions and considerations, yet these are often required to evaluate possible scenarios that may occur in vivo.
