Refractory Materials and Testing

Refractory Materials and Testing Training Course

In person course

Duration: 2 days  |  Learner level: Adaptable to suit audience

This two‑day course introduces the fundamentals of refractory materials and how they are tested in practice. Participants will develop an understanding of how refractory materials are manufactured, how their microstructure influences performance, and why this knowledge is essential to interpreting test results.

The course then explores common refractory test methods, what each test measures, and how results should be used – and not misused – when making technical and commercial decisions. This course provides a strong foundation for anyone working with refractories, regardless of prior experience.

Skills gained

  • Refractory fundamentals
  • Microstructural understanding
  • Test interpretation
  • Technical judgement

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the basic composition and microstructure of refractory materials
  • Explain how refractory manufacturing routes influence material behaviour
  • Describe common refractory test methods and their purpose
  • Interpret test results appropriately and understand their limitations
  • Use test data more effectively when specifying or assessing refractory materials
