Lucideon to Exhibit at the 8th NDA Estate Decommissioning Supply Chain Event

Lucideon is pleased to announce that it is exhibiting at the 8th NDA Estate Decommissioning Supply Chain Event in Manchester, UK on 1 November 2018.

Lucideon has been chosen to appear in the Innovation Zone, reflecting its increasing focus on developing disruptive technologies for the nuclear industry.

The nuclear team at Lucideon, headed up by recently-recruited Tim Abbott, will be showcasing two of its innovative waste encapsulation technologies:  MIDAR and Flash Sintering.

MIDAR is a geopolymer technology that Lucideon is trialling for the encapsulation/immobilisation/solidification of hazardous wastes, both nuclear and chemical, including high volumes of contaminated liquids.

Flash Sintering is an innovative technology that uses the application of an electric field and current to provide densification of materials over very short timescales at dramatically reduced furnace temperatures. In particular, full ceramic and glass ceramics (as used for waste vitrification) can be flash sintered, which could allow for waste processing to happen at significantly lower temperatures and reduced time, offering improvements to safety, schedule and cost.

Tim Abbott said:

“We’re excited to be showcasing our innovative technologies at this important event.

“We are the only facility in the world to have a scaled-up flash sintering demonstration & testing capability.  And, by the end of 2018, we hope to be trialling flash sintering for the potential processing of vitrified problematic waste streams. We also believe that there is potential for this technology to improve the microstructure of nuclear fuel pellets for the production of accident tolerant and longer life fuels.”

Lucideon is on stand i25 in the Innovation Zone.
