Functionally Graded Ceramics and Gradient Structure Ceramics

Functionally Graded Ceramics and Gradient Structure Ceramics Consultancy and Development

Functionally graded ceramics are ceramic components in which the composition, porosity, density, microstructure, or other properties change through the thickness or across a defined location. Also described as gradient structure ceramics or graded ceramic structures, these materials allow different areas of a component to perform different functions.

A functionally graded ceramic may, for example, combine a dense outer surface for strength, wear resistance, or environmental protection with a porous inner structure for reduced mass, thermal management, permeability, or biological integration.

Lucideon supports the development of functionally graded ceramic materials from initial concept and formulation through forming, densification, characterization, process optimization, and pilot scale manufacture.

Potential benefits

  • Reduced mass
  • Improved surface strength or wear resistance
  • Better thermal gradient management
  • Reduced mismatch between dissimilar materials
  • Tailored permeability
  • Localized electrical, thermal, or biological functionality
