Modular and volumetric buildings can be tested during the development stage for both structural and environmental performance. Various testing methods can be used to prove the modules or panels are fit for purpose and will meet the building regulations performance standards when constructed in the factory.

During the design stage, the dimensions of the modules and panels must be considered in relation to the storage, handling and transportation logistics. All of these factors must be taken into account as additional components (e.g. bracing) or thicker gauge materials may need to be incorporated to assist during the lifting and transportation processes.

If transportation, storage and installation is not considered at the design stage, this can impact upon the condition of the building after installation, both structurally and environmentally.

Modules and panels can be damaged during the initial lifting process, through the transportation process, or during the final lifting stages when delivered to site. The point at which the damage is sustained and the effects of any damage can be monitored and assessed, and the results used to redesign either the transport routes, lifting plans or the modules and panels.
