Health & Safety Monitoring Course

A two-day course targeted at individual organizations seeking to test the implementation of their health & safety management systems.

Course Overview

To enable designated delegates to be able to fulfil their allotted responsibility for undertaking health & safety monitoring.

The course is designed to be delivered in-house to a group of Supervisors/Team Leaders/ Managers from the same organization.

The course is highly interactive and enables delegates to learn through discussion and practice.

Course Objectives

The course objectives comprise:

  • Understand the importance of health & safety
  • Provide delegates with the knowledge and understanding of specific health & safety tools (including risk assessments, and method statements)
  • Delegates to develop health & safety ‘eyes’
  • Understanding how to complete the organization’s health & safety ‘Checklist’

Course Delivery and Content

The method of delivery is informal and interactive. A variety of exercises are established creating opportunities for questions and group discussion.

During delivery of the training, there will be an opportunity to reflect upon the currency and adequacy of the organization’s health & safety ‘Checklist’.

Day 1:
Explore the meaning behind various health & safety terms including:

  • Monitoring
  • Inspection
  • Hazard
  • Harm
  • Control
  • Risk
  • Risk assessment

In order to better understand these concepts, exercises will encourage delegates to apply them.

Delegates will participate in a 60-minute classroom-based monitoring exercise based upon a real event, and start to develop health & safety ‘eyes’.

Day 2:
Delegates will continue their classroom-based monitoring exercise and identify their conclusions and concerns. These will be compared to the actual conclusions reached by an independent and competent Inspector.

Method Statements will be introduced and explained.

The conditions that can lead to an accident will be explored. In this context, the role of the inspector, and the importance of monitoring will be discussed.

The organization’s own health & safety ‘Checklist’ will be introduced; explained, and applied by the delegates.

Why Monitor?

The Health and Safety Executive’s Managing for health and safety (HSG65, 2013) states:

“Checking that you are managing risks in your organization is a vital, sometimes overlooked step. It will give you the confidence that you are doing enough to keep on top of health and safety and maybe show you how you could do things better in the future.”

This course will assist your organization in keeping ‘on top of health and safety’, as well as satisfying HSE guidance.
